Engine Options

Arrow offers the most Engine options of any clubman.

Several factors need to be taken into account prior to making the decision of which engine to install.

By far the easiest is the 4AGE 20V with this being the most popular fitment giving best “bang for your buck” as well as one of the most powerful available.

Compare the 4AGE with naturally aspirated (non-turbo) engines commercially available in 2007.

Keep in mind the 4AGE is 1600cc or 1.6litres.

Vehicle/EngineCapacity (cc) Power (kW)
4AGE 20 valve 1587 125
Ford Fiesta / Duratec 1600 74
Ford Focus / Duractec 2000 107
Holden Viva 1796 89
Holden Astra / Ecotec 1796 103
Holden Astra / Ecotec 2200 110
Toyota Corolla / 1ZZ-FE 1794 93
Mazda MX5 1998 118
Mazda 3 1999 108
Mazda 3SP 2260 115

Please keep in mind that some of the above engines are NOT suitable for fitment to an Arrow, the purpose of the above was to demonstrate what a FANTASTIC motor the 4AGE is compared to the current offerings available.

The 4AGE STILL outperforms larger capacity engines AND it loves to rev – perfect for a true sports car. How does a standard 7,800 rpm rev limit sound?

To Turbo or not to Turbo?

Heat dissipation is the biggest issue as well as the extra plumbing required to make this fitment successful. Numerous Arrow’s have been built with Turbo or Supercharger engines. If you want a simple fitment, this is not the route for you.

Engines that have been fitted include 3SGTE, SR20DET, 4AGZE and 4AGZTE. But BE WARNED they require a large amount of effort to achieve a satisfactory fitment.

Front Wheel Drive Engines (FWD):

The 4AGE 20V is a FWD Engine that can still bolt up directly to the RWD 5 Speed Gearbox used in earlier RWD 4AGE’s. The same applies for all 3SGE’s, however the latest Gen4 is already RWD and comes with a 6 Speed Gearbox as standard. We recommend with this engine you use the T50 gearbox with a 1S or 2S bellhousing as the 6 Speed is VERY large. This is well proven path for many Arrow builders and is simple to achieve.

The current Corolla and Celica Engines, 1ZZFE and 2ZZGE are only available in FWD configuration and will require a spacer to be fabricated to adapt a RWD gearbox and a special cradle for an engine mount as there is no provision on the side of the block. Not easy, but again, requires more effort and planning.

Emissions:

State regulations vary as to what you can fit and still register the vehicle. Some States (NOT Vic/NSW) allow ADR 37/01 or ADR 79/00 engines to still be registered. Most States either now, or will soon, require ADR 79/01 compliance. Please check with your State Agent BEFORE you purchase an engine. Most Engineers will require proof of compliance. We can provide such proof for the following engines. They have all been fitted to a Arrow AND LEGALLY REGISTERED in varying numbers, based on the Engine type.

ADR 79/01 compliant engines:

4AGE 20V, Honda S2000, Ford Focus, Mazda MX5

Racing?

Arrow Sports Cars are Homologated as a Marque Sports Car with the following engines: 4AGE 16V, 4AGE 20V, 3SGE. So if you wish to go racing at a State level, ensure you choose one of these engines.
